Latest News

  • September 2014
    • Cancellations notified to us prior to 13th September: due to unforseen technical difficulties your refund will be by a cheque sent by snail mail rather than back to your card. Cancellations notified to us from 13th September do not receive a refund as per Rule 13.

    • Final instructions to hikers were issued by email on Tuesday 9th September to the email address registered on Active Events. Please check your spam and bulk email folders in case it has ended up there. A copy of final instructions is available here.

  • August 2014
    • The FAQs have been corrected, if you try to look yourself up on the entry list the link now takes you to the company we are using this year to handle our online entries. Unfortunately we hadn't spotted previously that it had been pointing to details for the 2013 event.

  • June 2014
    • The entry list opened at 09:00 on 15th June and filled up by 10:33 on the same day. Click on the "2014 Event" link on the left to add yourself to the reserve list.

  • May 2014
    • The running of the Longmynd Hike is totally dependant upon keeping the goodwill of the landowners whose land we cross. Please help the organisers by respecting their land, especially in light of these comments recently made.

    • Shelve (CP9) to Corndon Hill (CP10), specifically between Shelve and the A488.
Please can you avoid practising this part of the route IN THE DARK e.g. using torches and head torches.
The farmer here keeps cows and their very young calves - the cows are naturally VERY protective towards their young and get spooked and agitated by unexpected lights at night. They can become VERY UNPREDICTABLE!!!
This won't be a problem on the Hike night, just in the weeks leading up to it.

    • Corndon Hill(CP10) to Woodgate Farm(CP11)
At the bottom of the descent of Corndon Hill the wicket gate onto the farmland has been re-sited by Powys County Council,(presumably using GPS). The new wicket gate, a very posh one, is 70 metres to the West e.g. to the right as you come down the hill - please use it to regain the original route.

    • The perennial problem of litter along the route. we know it is possibly not us - but please can you be sure that it isn't.

The Longmynd Hike is a 50 mile competition hike open to anyone aged 18 or over, which takes place over the first weekend of October every year.

The route: The hike follows a set figure-of-eight route over the rugged countryside of South Shropshire and the Welsh Marches, with about 8,000 feet of climbing covering eight summits. The start is at 13:00 hours on the Saturday from Church Stretton and the object is to complete the course in under 24 hours. Church Stretton School is used as the hike HQ for the weekend and is where registration and kit check takes place, car parking is available and all hikers must report here first. The hike starts from a location to the East of the A49. The route is detailed in the "Hike Route" section of this site.

Safety: Suitable footwear must be worn, waterproofs and a specified amount (or more) of safety equipment must be carried, which is fully detailed in the rules. All checkpoints are linked by radio to the hike HQ at the school, first aid and rescue/sweep teams provide backup and transport is provided from retirement points back to the school for competiors who are unable to complete the route.

What is provided: Drinks are provided for competitors at roadside checkpoints and the school. The school also provides breakfast for competitors from early on the Sunday, and has showers and classrooms for sleeping available. Everyone who starts the hike receives a certificate of their achievment showing the distance completed and time taken, the souvenir tally carried en-route is returned with the certificate.

Trophies: 12 individual trophies and two team trophies are awarded.

Results: A list of finishers and winners will be available, the list will also be published on this website as soon as practical after the event ends.
